2017–2023 — multiple brands, one operator
The operation runs under several names: Beast Mode Live, BTV, Viking Media and GreenWing Media. All trace back to the same operator and infrastructure.
December 2023 — the warning
ACE contacts Weibley and demands he stop. Instead of complying, he moves the operation to a new domain — vonwik.com — and rebrands the services as Shrugs and Zing. The service advertises access to more than 9,000 channels, including international programming and live sport.
March 2025 — the lawsuit
Amazon, Netflix, Disney, Paramount and other major studios file a copyright infringement complaint in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania.
2025 — no defence
Weibley is personally served. He never files an answer and never appears in court. The studios move for default judgment.
June 2026 — judgment
Judge Jennifer Wilson enters a $9,000,000 default judgment — statutory damages calculated as 60 copyrighted works at the maximum $150,000 per work, the rate reserved for willful infringement. Why the damages were so high
This is the part most coverage skips, and it is the most interesting detail in the case.
Statutory damages for copyright infringement in the US range from $750 per work up to $150,000 per work. The maximum is reserved for infringement the court finds willful.
Weibley was assessed at the maximum. Two facts drove that:
- He continued operating after receiving cease-and-desist demands.
- He rebranded and moved domains specifically in response to that pressure.
That second point is worth sitting with. The rebrand was presumably intended to make the operation harder to pursue. In court it did the opposite — it became the evidence of willfulness that multiplied the damages by up to 200 times.
